Charo Calvo

Biography

After a career as a dancer in Belgium with the contemporary dance company Ultima Vez, she began studying Electroacoustic Composition with Annette Vande Gorne at Mons Conservatoire. She graduated in 1999 as a lecturer in Composition Applied to Media at the Mons Conservatoire in the Electroacoustic section, and for the last 15 years has been leading sound creation workshops in Flemish art schools in Brussels, RITCS and LUCA Arts.
As a composer and sound designer, she has created the soundtracks for numerous dance, theatre, film, video and audiovisual installations broadcast internationally, as well as acousmatic pieces. Her compositions are always produced with a concern for experimentation, where the search for a personal language is fundamental and the dramaturgy of sound is re-invented each time. Her radio piece ‘Phonobiographie#1’ received the Palma Ars Acustica from the EBU (European Broadcating Union, Geneva) in 2014, was nominated for the Prix Europa Berlin, and was a finalist for the Prix Phonurgia Nova 2015 in Paris. Her latest radio piece ‘Qualia’ ( 2017) is produced by the Australian national radio ABC Radio Unit Soundproof, with the support of the FACR Wallonie-Bruxelles and the ACSR in Brussels. She was a finalist at the 2017 EBU Palma Ars Acustica in Vienna and at the Grand Prix Nova 2017 in Bucharest, Romania.
In May 2017, she created the music for the show ‘Mockumentary of a contemporary saviour’ by Wim Vandekeybus, in co-production with IRCAM, Paris.
